New Girl is Simply Adorkable

Let me start by saying that I wasn't clever enough to come up with "Simply Adorkable". Some creative copywriter over at Fox probably did. I saw it on the site and loved it. Ok, now on to the post. If you want to get a jump on Fox's new comedy series "New Girl", go to Hulu.com this week to watch the first episode. Already expecting to like this show, I loved it! Zooey Deschanel is quirkly and lovable (as usual) in her role as Jess, a recently single girl moving in with three guys she met on craigslist. Her new roomies have to adjust to a lady in the house, but they soon fall for her charms. And by charms, I mean her Lord of the Rings references, horrible sense of fashion and tendency to make up theme songs about herself. Ok, so maybe lady wasn't the right word.

Jess' roommates are Nick, Schmidt and Winston. After only one ep, I'm already super crushing on Nick. He was dumped six months ago, so can totally relate to Jess. He's compassionate and mature. Just what Jess needs in her life right about now. Schmidt on the other hand has inspired one of my favorite things in the show, The Douchebag Jar. That's right, after every douchey thing he says or does, he has to put a dollar into the jar (it's always full). LOVE IT! That could totally come in handy.

In the pilot episode, one of the roommates is Coach, played by Damon Wayans Jr. Since "Happy Endings" was picked up for a second season, he wasn't able to do the show. I wish there was a way he could have done both. I'm loving this guy. Cuter than his father and definitely has the family funny gene. From what I can tell on Fox.com, Coach is replaced by a similar character that is a former athlete, also played by a tall, bald, African America man in his late twenties. But not the same character? I'm a little confused. Guess I'll figure it out when I see the second episode. Jess is also supported by her best friend Cece, who happens to be a model. Not sure if we'll meet her mom, but sounds like they're close. She knew after a break up, Jess would be watching Dirty Dancing on repeat. It's like we're the same person!

I am really excited about this show. Normally endearing isn't a word you'd use to describe a comedy, but this one totally is. Part of me feels like Jess and the other part wants to take care of her. Although it's unlikely in real life, it's sweet that these boys (who are basically strangers) want to be her guides.

In the pilot (and yes I know it's just a pilot) the characters are all very well written, funny but with loads with room to grow. There is a great dynamic among the cast. I imagine they all have fun on set. There is a bright tone that gives the viewer a hopeful feeling. Jess will get through this breakup and come out the other side with three new best friends....and hijinks will occur in the meantime. So I highly encourage you to check out "New Girl" on Fox Tuesdays at 9pm starting Sept 20th. But you can see the pilot on Hulu.com right now.

PaleyFest's NBC Fall Preview Party

On Thursday night, The Paley Center hosted the NBC Preview Party. What was extra cool, was that it was totally free (unless you got screwed by the public parking garage like I did) and there were goodies. The night was kicked off by a viewing of "Whitney" and a panel discussion with the stars and producers. Following the panel, was a showing of the five more brand spankin' new NBC shows. Here's my take...

"Whitney" - Some of you may already know Whitney Cummings from "Chelsea Lately" or a couple celebrity roasts. She's been doing stand up for years and this fall TV season, she's got two new shows. This one is autobiographical and she's also the creator and producer of the CBS comedy "2 Broke Girls". In "Whitney", she and her boyfriend of 3 years (played by Chris D'Elia aka stoner Stankowski of Glory Daze) are in a committed relationship with no plans to get married. They are accompanied by four pals. Two are engaged and giddy. One is a disgusting bachelor on the prowl and the last is a drunk, bitter, divorcee (she's my favorite).

I love the billboards around town. They're so funny, but the actual show left something to be desired. It's multicamera and shot in front of a live audience. During the panel, everyone expressed how proud they were of that fact, but I failed to see why it made the show better for the viewer. I totally get that it provides an energy for these stand ups turned actors, but so much about this series from the audible laughs to the cheesy lines is cliche. I love D'Elia, but he had a smile on his face after every funny line he delivered, which made it less funny for me. My final verdict, I couldn't stand it. Unless you're already a huge fan of Whitney Cummings, skip it. I'm sure you can find something else to watch or do on Thursdays at 9:30.

"The Playboy Club" - It's the early '60s. You're in Chicago. You want to look at sexy ladies. Where do you go? Why the playboy club of course...if you've got a key. Eddie Cibrian does, or should I say hot shot lawyer Nick Dalton does. In the pilot he helps a new bunny who's gotten into some trouble. The killing kind, not the baby kind. The shocking violence that transpired was very abrupt, occurring in the first few minutes. That pretty much took me out of it.

Although the costumes were gorgeous and the art direction superb, the acting left something to be desired. And the story.....really? It was melodramatic and soapy. If that's what you're looking for, go ahead and give it a try. But for me, it's a thumbs down. I could hardly wait for it to end, but maybe you're looking for some bunny tail on Mondays at 10pm.

"Up All Night" - Christina Applegate and Will Arnett play new parents without a clue in this new single camera comedy. Chris (Arnett) is getting used to being a stay at home dad while wife Reagan (Applegate) goes back to work for crazy talk show host, Ava (Maya Rudolph).

Very excited about this show. After finally getting into "Samantha Who" this summer, I'm definitely a big Christina fan and who doesn't love Will Arnett?! Plus, if you're over 25 you can most likely relate to this subject because you've either gone through it all or are fearing babies without handbooks. Check this one out....seriously. Wednesdays at 10pm.

"Prime Suspect" - Based on the highly successful British series starring Dame Helen Mirren, the American version features Maria Bello as a New York City Homicide Detective Jane Timoney. Jane is no ordinary cop. She takes an unorthodox approach in her investigations as she has more to lose being the only girl in an all boys club.

I like it! So far anyway. There are never enough strong, badass women on television so it's refreshing when you see one that carries a gun and makes no apologies for going after what she wants. Plus, her live in boyfriend is played by my dream boyfriend Kenneth Johnson (aka Lem on "The Shield" or Kozik on "SOA"). After seeing all the ads (Cop. An Attitude) and the first half of the pilot with Jane being all tough, I really liked that they showed her vulnerable side. It makes sense that someone fighting that hard would break down every now and then. I don't see too many men liking it but I'm hoping it will be hit with the ladies. Whether you're a Dick or a Jane, check it out on Thursdays at 10pm.

"Free Agents" - In another British import, Hank Azaria and Kathryn Hahn play Alex and Helen, coworkers at a Portland PR firm. Alex is divorced and missing his kids. Helen is still mourning her dead fiance after a year and drinking her way through it. They are both a hot mess, but like everyone else, just trying it figure it out. Unfortunately, sleeping together may have complicated things...or does it?

This one definitely has potential. I'm always interested in screwed up characters, so of course I like both leads. So great to see Hank Azaria and finally Kathryn Hahn is cast as a lead. For years, she's been the best friend and I've always thought she was too funny to just be the best friend. If you're a "Buffy" fan, you'll love seeing Anthony Head reprise his role as the out of touch boss. Give this one a try and let's see where it goes. Wednesdays at 10:30pm.

"Grimm" - Detective Nick Burkhardt is no ordinary cop. He's a decendent of the Brothers Grimm who were more than just fairly tale writers. They were supernatural profilers. It's now up to Nick to keep the evil supernatural creatures in check. Burkhardt is backed up by partner Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby) and a reformed werewolf (Silas Weir Mitchell) who teaches Nick about the supernatural world.

I'm not sure yet. The Grimm world is beautifully shot, has great effects and made us jump in the first minute and a half, but there's something missing. I can't quite put my finger on it yet, but it needed a little something. Not crazy about the lead. David Guintoli didn't grab me the way a network lead should. I love Russell Hornsby, but his character really bothered me. The actual people in this supernatural world, don't seem real. The humans in a world full of creatures need to be relatable as they are our touchstone. Hopefully the writing will improve to match the cinematography. If you're into big bad wolves and other fairy tale creatures, check out "Grimm" Fridays at 9pm. Wait...does NBC really want it to succeed? Historically, Fridays are where shows go to die. Hmmmm......

Wish I could have made it to the other network preview parties. Maybe next year. In the meantime, hope this helps you decide which new NBC shows to check out. Keep an eye out for lots of reviews in the next few weeks as the new schedule unfolds.

Get Ready To Laugh!

Who ever thought I would have seven returning comedies to look forward to this fall? Not me, I'm such a drama queen (when it comes to television that is). I much more likely to be watching "The Killing" or "The Shield" than "Two and a Half Men". Well, let's face it, you couldn't pay me to watch "Two and a Half Men". In any case, my TV schedule has been jam packed with murder, torture, backstabbing and other horribleness for the last several years. I've finally found somewhat of a balance with dramedies and full on sitcoms such as these seven, returning this fall that I am totally psyched about.

"RAISING HOPE" - White trash at the height of hilarity. The Chance family doesn't have much, but they've got more love for Baby Hope than they can handle. Martha Plimpton, Garret Dillahunt, Lucas Neff, Shannon Woodward and Cloris Leachman have me in stitches every week as their characters attempt to raise the cutest baby on television.

"MODERN FAMILY" - There is no better representation of today's family and relationships than those shown on "Modern Family". Let's face it, things aren't what they were when we were kids. Fewer things are funnier than watching these parents (especially Ed O'Neil's Jay) raise children who have cell phones, laptops and more friends on Facebook than Claire has neuroses.

"HAPPY ENDINGS" - The new Friends? Maybe. It's too early to tell, but this group of late twenty somethings was surprisingly hilarious. It's got the bride that left the groom at the alter, but their still gonna be friends friends, the crazy fun girl, the interracial married folks and it's even got the straightest gay guy you've ever met (on TV that is). For me, it's a formula for funny.

"HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER" - After six seasons, I still love the McClaren's gang. That whole Zoey story line last season had me a little disappointed but I have faith that they'll bounce back. Will Barney and Robin get back together? Will Ted meet the mother this season (or ever)? Will we get to see Lily through her inevitably hilarious pregnancy? I hope the answer is yes to all of the above.

"THE OFFICE" - Will The Office be funny without Steve Carell? James Spader is funny, but in that creepy way. So what does that mean for Dunder Mifflin Scranton? Does it all go down hill from here? I hope not and I'll definitely be tuning it because even without Carell, you've got the hilarious Mindy Kaling, Craig Robinson, Ed Helms and entire gang.

"BORED TO DEATH" - Jason Schwartzman + Ted Danson + Zach Galifianakis + Lots of Weed + Private Investigating = An Extremely Comical HBO Series. This could possibly be my favorite of Ted Danson's roles. It was so unexpected which was why it is so amusing. Galifianakis delivery is side splitting. Can't wait!!!!

"PARKS AND RECREATION" - Last season was so great with the addition of Rob Lowe and Adam Scott to the cast. This season, we can look forward to Patricia Clarkson as Tammy 1, Ron Swanson's first crazy wife. How amazing is that going to be?! Will Leslie run for mayor? I hope so. Will she and Ben fiiiiinally get together. They better!!!

The Summer of Spectacular New Series

It feels like more summer series premiered in 2011 than ever before. And boy did they deliver. As the summer comes to a close, I felt the need to reflect on my favorites and express my excitement for their imminent return. In no particular order (for the most part) here's what I've been watching for the past three months.

"SUITS" - If you follow me (@TVMaven) on Twitter, you already know how freaking cool I think this show is. I'm mean SERIOUSLY! Harvey Specter is the epitome of cool as is this show. The gorgeous shots of New York and the fantastic costuming only enhance the great story of a hot shot lawyer taking a genius (minus a law degree) under his wing. Gabriel Macht and Patrick Adams are superbly supported by Rick Hoffman and Gina Torres, two of my favorite character actors. I'm extremely excited for the season finally this Thursday night. If you missed season 1, better catch up before next summer when they return with 16 all new episodes (4 more!).

"AWKWARD" - For me, "Awkward" was the surprise of the summer. I never thought I'd be watching MTV again, but this little series about a girl (with my name) suffering through high school with a heroic sense of humor has me coming back week after week. Of course the writing is way more sophisticated than actual high schoolers, but not in that melodramatic "Dawson's Creek" kind of way....in an awesomely funny way. I'd never condone actual teenagers watching it. So if you're of age, check it out. We've still got a couple weeks left to go before school's out in Palos Verdes. They've already been picked up for Season 2, which we can expect in 2012. Go Jenna!

"WILFRED" - If "Awkward" was a surprise, "Wilfred" was a bombshell. After months of seeing promos, I became used to the idea of a man in a dog suit that everyone else saw as a dog, but I had no idea it would be so filthy. I'm pretty sure every episode was rated MA LS (mature audience, containing language and sex) some needed a V for violence and if there was a D for drugs, slap that onto every intro. This may turn some people off, but I thoroughly enjoyed being shocked week after week. Can't wait for more in Season 2 next summer.

"FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER" - There was no question I would love this British series being created by an "Inbetweeners" alum and starring Simon Bird, Tamsin Greig and Mark Heap. This dysfunctional, yet hilariously close family always seems to find trouble during their weekly dinners. Having this show air over the summer definitely took the sting off of the "Inbetweeners" ending, but now what will fill its void after next Saturday's finale? Counting down to series (season for you non BBC watchers) 2.

"SWITCHED AT BIRTH" - I love this show! So many questions. It really makes you think about what you would do in their situation(s). It's very complicated and there are always new things coming to light in addition to these two girls just trying to make their way through high school. After it's breakout success, ABC Family added twelve more eps (for a total of 22) to season 2 which will begin airing in January 2012. So it won't continue to be a summer series, but it definitely brightened this year up.

"FRANKLIN & BASH" - Who doesn't want to see Zack Morris all buff and in a suit? I sure do and that's just one reason why I heart this new lawyer-y comedy series from TNT. Breckin Meyer is definitely another. The chemistry between these two characters and the actors is hilariously entertaining to watch. Rounding out my top three reasons to watch F&B is Pindi, their agorophohic, Indian researcher that lives in the man cave along with the legal duo. This guy's got me in stitches every week, just wish there was more of him. Check out the first season so that you're good to go next summer as TNT has already renewed them for a second go around.

"FALLING SKIES" - No other show had me more excited week after week than TNT's newest sci-fi drama, which is why I couldn't just sit in front of the TV. I had to attend the Paley Center panel so that I could hear straight from the creators where the show was going. There is so much drama in the form of aliens headed our way next summer. If I recall correctly, TNT renewed the series after only two weeks (or so). Pretty frakkin' impressive for a sci-fi show. Leading the charge in season one was Noah Wylie, but who knows what season two will hold for him after boarding the uber scary alien spaceship. This show is about character and survival at the core. Even if you aren't a sci-fi geek, give it a try. The action and adventure is interwoven with scenes of heartfelt connection. Relatable to any audience. Watch it! Love it!


So, the bar has been set pretty high. My hope is that 2012 will not only deliver terrific second seasons of these shows, but a few more great series. Premieres aren't just for the fall anymore.

Lifetime Goes with Another Cop Drama in "Against the Wall"

After CBS's success with "Blue Bloods", Lifetime is trying it's hand at the cop family drama. Abbie Kowalski (Rachael Carpani) just made detective. The problem is that the only opening was in the internal affairs department. Not the place to be when you have three brothers on patrol and a dad that's retired from the force. Treat Williams and Kathy Baker play Kowalski parents Don and Sheila.

In the first episode, Abbie reports to her new post and meets her very pregnant partner Lina, played by Marisa Ramirez. You might remember her as evil bitch Gia on "General Hospital" if you were addicted in high school like I was. Big surprise, Abbie gets her first threat on the job. Right off the bat she realizes, telling her family isn't going to be the hardest part.

There's a guy, of course, but it's not the one she's making booty calls to. Exactly what all the ladies watching Lifetime tune in to see. Abbie's got a lot to deal with, but not sure I want to watch. It's a bit Lifetime-y and melodramatic for me, but it is a good companion to "The Protector" if you like that. I will say that they've got a good music supervisor. We'll have to wait and see if it makes it with only 1.8 million views for the debut. If you're a Lifetime fan, you'll probably like this series. Let me know if it gets better

"Outnumbered" Was Underwhelming

Just checked out BBC America's newest edition to The Ministry of Laughs, "Outnumbered". The series, created by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jerkin follows the daily life of a South London family. Sue and Pete definitely have their hands full. Jake is eleven and too big for his britches. He may not be a teenager yet, but he sure acts like it. Ben is a hyperactive eight year old that also happens to be a pathological liar. Cute little Karen is a five year old with lots of uncomfortable questions. In addition to the craziness at home, Pete teaches history at an inner city public school and Sue is a part time personal assistant.

In this first episode, it's Jake's first day at a new school and he doesn't want to be late. Fat chance of that when his younger brother is searching for a show-and-tell item (items include: Dad's laptop, an old fashioned radio and a power drill). Of course he's lying that show-and-tell is today. Sue can't find her keys and Karen has head lice. Too bad there's no time for a delousing this morning. So off to school they go. Cut to evening in the Brockman home. Jake avoids all questions regarding his new school. Sue picks nits (British lice) out of Karen's hair and Ben kicks a ball around the house.

I really felt like I was supposed to like it, but the Brockman family didn't seem funnier than any other. The one thing I thought was funny was how the parents keep blaming the kid with lying problem for things he didn't do. My guess/hope is that it gets better since they are actually in their third series (that's season for us Americans) and they've won several awards. I've also read/Chris Hardwick said that there is a lot of improv incorporated into the show. Maybe the first episode was more scripted than those that follow. *Fingers crossed* I'll give it another couple of episodes, but we'll see. It didn't grab me right off. Anyone else seen it? Please tell me it gets better.

Will You Be Attending "Friday Night Dinner"?

Last night was the BBC's Ministry of Laughs premiere of "Friday Night Dinner". Created and written by Robert Popper ("The Inbetweeners", "Peep Show", "The IT Crowd") the show is about the weekly dinners of a British family that although they are Jewish, not in the strictest sense. With "The Inbewteeners" ending last week, I was overjoyed to see Simon Bird (Will) still in the line up. He plays eldest son Adam who is a musician but pays the bills writing jingles. Adam's practical joke loving brother Jonny is played by newcomer Tom Rosenthal. Paul Ritter is Martin, the patriarch with a hearing aid and shirt phobia. I was very excited to see that Mum Jackie is played by Tamsin Greig (most recently seen in "Episodes"). To top off a great cast, neighbor Jim is none other than Mark Heap (Simon Pegg fans like moi will remember him as Brian in "Spaced").

In the first episode, Dad has a problem down his pants, Adam's first jingle is about to air on the radio and Jonny keeps sending horrifying texts to Adam from Mum's phone. I LOVED IT! If you've seen the promos over the last few weeks, you probably figured as I did that it was going to be a smash. It may be a family show, but there is a youthful, hip feel (I'm quite aware how old that statement made me sound, thank you).

I liked the opening title sequence which used some cool graphics and a dancey version what I think was Miike Snow's Animal. It was reminded me of the opening titles for "The Inbetweeners" but brighter and only slightly less catchy. This first episode was great because there were no gimmicks, it was just plain funny. Let's face it, we all have embarrassing parents, it's just a matter of how embarrassing. The Goodman boys love their Mum and Dad, but I wouldn't blame them if they didn't want to be seen in public with them, well Dad anyway. Jackie's not that bad, a typical mom. But she does have a problem giving to charity...or maybe it's because creepy neighbor Jim is doing the fundraising. Who knows.

Good job BBC America on slipping in a new show to hold off my Inbetweeners withdrawals. Not an easy task. Check out this clip and stay tuned Fridays at 11:30pm on BBC America.

Do You Need "Web Therapy"?

Lisa Kudrow returns to television with the new Showtime series "Web Therapy". This is actually season two as it started as a web series that she created with partners Dan Bucatinsky and Don Roos.

Dr. Fiona Wallice (Kudrow) has started seeing patients for three minute sessions via iChat. The typical fifty minute sessions were just a little much for her. Unfortunately for her patients, she spends most of the time talking about herself. The unhappliy married Mr. Wallice is played by the fabulous Victor Garber and we can expect some great guest stars. Oscar winner Meryl Streep did a three episode arc in the first season.

Kudrow looks terrific and I'm glad she's back doing what she does best. But if you're looking for Phoebe, don't look here. She plays Fiona with a voice slightly less annoying than Regina Phalange. It's hard for me to get into a show when the main character is unlikable. It's not for everyone. There are some funny moments, but not quite my sense of humor. I'm gonna pass on the healing for now. Awkward. Wait, is this show about me?

I haven't watched a series on MTV since season 3 of "The Real World" (yes I realize that was about a million years ago), but just for you I gave their newest edition a shot. "Awkward." is about the trials and tribulations of high schooler Jenna Hamilton. I like her already.

Creator Lauren Iungerich penned the pilot episode in which Jenna loses her virginity to a jerk.... at camp, receives a mysterious letter on how to not be invisible anymore and then has a horrible accident in which everyone thinks she tried to kill herself. Despite all that, she follows the instructions in the letter and goes from invisible girl to that girl.

Now I know that I am not the primary demographic, but I like it. It does however make me scared to become a parent. Watching these teen shows makes me realize how different my kids' childhood is going to be from mine. It's down right terrifying. Call me a prude or conservative, whatever, To me, this is not for young teenagers, but the slightly older who can appreciate it. The writing was more sophisticated than I expected. Of course teenagers don't really talk like that, but it wasn't all Dawson's Creek-y. As an MTV show, it makes sense that music is highlighted. Artist and song title pop up at the bottom of the screen and all music info can be found on the website. All in all, it's worth a second watch.

"Falling Skies" at OnStage@Paley

Tonight I attended OnStage@Paley featuring the creative team and cast of "Falling Skies". It's the latest TNT hit, picked up for a second season after only a couple of episodes aired. In attendance were executive producers Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Mark Verheiden. Cast members Moon Bloodgood, Colin Cunningham, Sarah Carter, Drew Roy and Dr. John Carter himself....Noah Wylie graced the stage.

I have to say, Noah Wylie is incredibly articulate and well spoken. All of his answers/comments were very intelligent and thoughtful. I'd love to sit down and talk about television and film with him if his insight into storytelling wasn't so intimidating.

I figured that production on the current season had wrapped up a while ago, since we've been seeing promos for what seems like forever. I was surprised to learn that the pilot was shot nearly two years ago. Falvey and Frank actually attended upfronts with FS two years in row. Well they finally made it and it's a smash.

Unfortunately, showrunner Mark Verheiden won't be returning for season two. You may have appreciated his work on "Smallville", "Battlestar Galactica" or "Heroes". He was slated to begin developing Stephen King's The Dark Tower into an NBC series, but the plugged was pulled just a few days ago. He didn't say what he'd be moving on to next, but he did say "never say never" in regards to returning to "Falling Skies".

It was revealed that we'll be introduced to yet another type of alien and that season one will leave us with a pretty big cliff hanger. Production will begin in October, so we'll probably see the second season premiere around the same time. You can't say FS doesn't make a great summer series.

Walton Goggins is My Hero

Every now and then I feel the need to sing the praises of one of my favorite actors and in my opinion, one of the best to grace the small and sometimes silver screen...Walton Goggins. He just signed on for Speilberg's Lincoln, playing an Ohio Congressman. Goggins is hitting the big screen hard this year with Cowboys & Aliens soon to drop and Straw Dogs, also starring my favorite vampire Eric Northman aka Alexander Skarsgard. Oh and he was just nominated for his very first Emmy.

Walton Goggins established himself on television as Detective Shane Vendrell on the grittiest cop show to date, "The Shield". His performance from day one blew me away. I can't even count the number of times that he brought me to tears with his delivery of brilliant words or simply a look. Walton is definitely an intense actor which made him a great fit for another FX show, "Justified".

In this Elmore Leonard adaptation Goggins plays Boyd Crowder. Over the course of the first two seasons, his character has transformed from a white supremacist, to a peaceful religious leader to strategic criminal. As much as I love Walton as Shane, there was something special about his Boyd-as-cult-leader. It was like he slipped into this other skin, yet was still Boyd. This metamorphosis was so exciting to watch. Between "The Shield" and "Justified", I revel in each and every scene that man steps foot into.

It was nearly a decade overdue, but Goggins finally garnered the attention of the Academy that he so richly deserves. If you've been a fan of "The Shield" and "Justified", you were over the moon when the Emmy nomination FINALLY came through this past Thursday. I've been rooting for this guy for years, so it's pretty damn satisfying to see that the world/industry is now appreciating an actor that I've felt so strongly about. Honestly, if I ever bump into Walton around town (which is a dream I have) I'd probably be too excited to speak...or break out in nervous laughter. In any case, it would be severely embarrassing. I hope this gets across my love/admiration/obsession with one of the best actor's in the biz. If you haven't see his work, check it out. You won't be sorry.

Texas Forever

For most of us, last night was the series finale of "Friday Night Lights". Boy was it a tear-jerker (I'm a big softy). I only began watching last summer on Netflix streaming. Despite my disinterest in football, was quickly hooked. It struck me how much this was a family show, not a teen show. More than football, it was about the relationships in this small town revolving around a game.

The real showcase of the series was the marriage of Coach Eric and Tami Taylor. In my eyes, they have the perfect marriage. The Taylors have their ups and downs, but in the end, it's how they deal. They listen and compromise. I know it's a TV marriage, but I hope someday I can have something like that. They are an inspiring couple.

Creator Peter Berg brought it all back around with the return of Matt Saracen, Tim Riggins, Landy Clarke and Tyra Collette. It was comforting to see familiar faces. Honestly, I haven't been a fan of the last two seasons. I like our original crew of Panthers. The new kids just didn't grab me. Yes, the Taylors are the heart of the show, but the Riggins, the Saracens, Tyra, Landry and yes the Garritys are all extended family.

For a show about football, there was less than five of the ninety minute final spent on the field. Instead we were given the farewell we all wanted. It wasn't a surprise that this show would be wrapped up with a bow, but it was very satisfying. Matt and Julie getting engaged. Tim building a house and planting roots in the place he's loved so much. Eric and Tami moving to Philadelphia because it's her turn. Sometimes on TV (not usually on the shows I watch) it all works out how it should.

It was reported yesterday, before the airing of the finale (for all of those without DirecTV) that Peter Berg is attempting to put together a second movie starring the core cast of the television series. It will pick up where the series left off. Not so sure how interested I am in seeing that at this point. Maybe they should let a good thing lie. It's a fine line when you start to have a revolving cast. One I feel they've already crossed. But I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong.

Before all this, Friday Night Lights was a book by H.G. Bissinger which Berg turned into a movie starring Billy Bob Thornton as Coach. After the success of the film, it was developed for television. I guess it's paid off. Throughout their five season run, FNL has been nominated for over a dozen Emmy awards including four for their farewell season. Kyle Chandler for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Connie Britton for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Jason Katims for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. And for the first time, Outstanding Drama Series.

I think we'll all miss visiting Dillon, Texas. Could never live there, but I'll miss it. This show was true. It was heartfelt and it was relatable. The standard has been set for great family drama. Let's hope the rest keep up.

Walton Goggins - "Justified"
No surprise here. I'm one of his biggest fans. Despite his breathtaking work on both "The Shield" and "Justified", Goggins has never even been nominated for an Emmy or a Golden Globe. If you ask me, it's a crime. His performance as the complex Boyd Crowder is more than worthy of accolades as was his work on "The Shield".

Brent Sexton - "The Killing"
Sexton is one of those quiet actors whose face you recognize because he's been acting for so long in supporting role on shows like "Deadwood" and "Life", but it was his performance in "The Killing" that really put him on the map. Sexton's portrayal of a grieving father wanting revenge infused the series with an undoubted intensity. Let's hope the folks over at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences feel the same.

Charlie Hunnam - "Sons of Anarchy"
This is the role that Hunnam has become most well known for, but I've been a fan since the days of Nicholas Nickelby, "Undeclared" and the wonderfully rebellious Green Street Hooligans. As tortured biker Jax Teller, Charlie has brought a sincere vulnerability to a character that must show strength at all times.

Amy Poehler - "Parks and Recreation"
If you don't know this woman is funny, you've been living under a rock for the last
ten years. She has been nominated for two Daytime Emmys for her work on "The Mighty B", two Primetime Emmys for "Saturday Night Live" and one for "Parks and Recreation", but she's not yet won. I'm more of a drama girl, but this lady makes me laugh.

H. John Benjamin - "Archer"
Last year Benjamin was nominated for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance, but didn't win. Guess who he lost to...Anne fricken Hathaway. This man makes his living as a voice over artist and she does a guest spot on "The Simpsons" and takes home Emmy. With his unique voice and ridiculously brilliant delivery, Benjamin has my vote (useless as it may be).

"Raising Hope"
My rule of thumb is that if a show makes you laugh til your face hurts and you nearly pee yourself, it should win an Outstanding Comedy Emmy. My guess is that Hope will be nominated, but it's a shame if it's not. Garret Dillahunt also deserves his own nom. I look forward to Tuesday nights this fall and needing a spare pair of panties.

"Southland"
This show keeps getting better and better. The writing is an actor's dream to perform. If you haven't seen last season, you're missing out. Next to "The Shield", this is the best and grittiest cop show I've ever seen. It's a surprise to me that they haven't seen writing, directing and acting nominations.

"Supernatural"
You may have noticed that it's an unofficial rule to never nominate WB/CW series for major awards. Sure, "Supernatural" can dominate the science fiction awards and now and then get a technical nomination, but it has never been taken seriously in the major categories. This is one of the most well written series on the air. I'd also like to see Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins get some recognition for their outstanding performances. Unfortunately, I've resigned myself to the fact that it will never happen especially now that we are nearing the end.

True Blood Boiling

After much prodding, in the last few months I begrudgingly gave "True Blood" a try. As you might have noticed, I do love my supernatural elements, but there was something about this show that turned me off in its first three seasons. I decided to give it a shot as it is a favorite of several of my friends. Most fans seem to be obsessed and I was expecting to hate it, so it was a bit of a surprise when I found it to be so-so. Although I've kept watching, it just doesn't get my juices flowing the way it does everyone else (OK, except for when Eric is shirtless).

Tonight's episode written by creator Alan Ball, If You Love Me, Why Am I Dyin'? was in my opinion, the best of the series to date. Let's start out with the fact that my favorite character Eric Northman who is usually super cool and cold is an innocent little boy lost at the opening. I was downright giddy. He was so cute and childlike, a complete 180 from his badass 1,000 year old self. A nice change up, Mr. Ball.

Moving on, you've got Sam flirting with a much missed Tara (big surprise). Their "relationship" used to bother me, but now I like them together. Too bad Tara doesn't like boys anymore. Jason is still tied to a bed and having very bad things done to him by crazy panther people. Sookie visits Alcide (it's getting a little hot in here). Tommy is attempting to con his way through Bon Temps, Bill rejects advances by his lawyer, Lafayette gets himself kidnapped (AGAIN!) and Jess comes clean with Hoyt. That's one jam packed episode. I usually start to get a little bored at some point, but not tonight. I truly hope that we get to see much more of memory free Eric. It makes me very happy.

My roommate/fellow couch critic warned me that each season/book is better than the last. I disagree with that, but this has been the best episode so far. Let's hope this is the best season to date.

Title Sequences Are So Much More Than Names

If you've read some of my reviews, you might have noticed that I am harsh when it comes to sucky opening credits. If you're going to do it, which most shows do, do it right. Be creative. Be original. The cast montage credits went out with the '90's. Therefore, I have great appreciation for those with great title sequences paired with fantastic music. You might see some familiar faces if you read my favorite theme songs post a couple weeks back. Plus, while researching for this post I found an awesome new website called The Art of the Title Sequence (http://www.artofthetitle.com. Here we go!

"Dexter" - Showtime

As it should have, these opening credits won an Emmy for Best Main Title Design in 2007. Between Eric S. Anderson's creative direction and Rolfe Kent's main theme it was destined to be a home run. When the series first aired, you at least knew that this was a show about a serial killer. So as we watch all these mundane morning rituals, they make your mind go to a dark place. He's just making breakfast! See, any one of us could have a dark passenger. Just another way the brilliant minds at "Dexter" get us to sympathize with a murderer.




"Chuck" - NBC

These main titles are so fun. I've watched them over and over during marathons and it never gets old. Cake's Short Skirt Long Jacket was a superb choice and the animation is terrific. It's light hearted (for spies) and super fun. I love the little man with the briefcase.



"Luther" - BBC

This sequence struck me the very first time I saw it. Often times, I am multitasking in front of the television, but this one stopped me in my tracks. The gorgeous and haunting music of Massive Attack's Paradise Cirus coupled with deep red graphics, bleeding into one another. You can tell right off that London will play a major role in the series and that it's titular character is very intense.



"Weeds" (Original Opening Titles) - Showtime

Way before Nancy and the clan went on the run, they lived in Agrestic, California. It was the epitome of suburbia. They great title sequence is set to the perfect song that criticizes the conformity of suburban America, "Little Boxes" by Malvina Reynolds. Main title designers Thomas Cobb and Robert Bradley were nominated for an Emmy for their work. Take a look and see how everything in Agrestic all looks just the same.



"The Borgias" - Showtime

These titles are not only beautiful, they are very indicative of the show to follow. Live action shots are mixed in, but it's mostly Renaissance paintings depicting the cruelty of the time. One image bleeds into another. Depictions of murder, sex and conspiracy are all present and set to the suspenseful score of Trevor Morris (please correct me if I'm wrong, I couldn't confirm this). It's too early for awards season, but good luck to the creative team which includes Christina Black and Garry Waller.

"The Inbetweeners" - BBC

It's a show about four friends who aren't quite as cool as they wish they were. Well, these titles are super cool in my book. They are short and sweet set to a very catchy song and the graphics are rad. Yes...I said rad.



There is something great about a long opening title sequence that tells a story in itself, but I tend to fast forward through it after a couple of watches. It's the short and sweet ones, like "The Inbetweeners" that I'm compulsive about sitting through each time.

"Suits" Slides Into My Thursday Night Line Up

On Thursday night, USA premiered their latest two hot dudes in suits show, aptly titled “Suits”. Gabriel Macht is the slick, high powered attorney who specializes in closing the deal. When he’s promoted to senior partner by big boss lady Gina Torres, Macht’s Harvey Specter is tasked with finding himself an associate.

The law firm of Pearson Hardman only hires Harvard graduates, but apparently they tend to be the blandest, narcolepsy inducing people in the world. Harvey is impressed and inspired when he accidentally interviews Mike Ross while Ross is in the process of outrunning the cops with a briefcase full of Mary Jane.

Mike (Patrick J. Adams) is a slacker, but he’s got the information retention abilities of rain man. He may have gotten kicked out of the world of higher education, but he makes his bucks taking law school entrance exams….until he meets Harvey that is. I like that name….Harvey. You don’t hear it too often. But it does sound like trouble.

Also at Pearson Hardman are paralegal extraordinaire Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle) and partner Louis Litt played by Rick Hoffman, that guy….you know, that guy….that plays a jackass in everything, but he’s really good at it.

I think this mentorship relationship could be interesting to watch. I like the style. If you watch “White Collar” then check this show out. It’s definitely in the same vein. Attractive men. Fashionable wardrobe. An element of sophistication. What more could you ask for in a summer series? (and I don’t mean that derogatorily). I'll definitely be giving this one a shot.

"Wilfred" Wins Me Over

Imagine your neighbor has a dog. Now imagine that while the entire world sees a frisky little puppy, all you see is a churlish, Australian man in a dog suit. This is the premise of the new FX series "Wilfred". Based on a short film which was then turned into an Australian series by Jason Gann (who plays the titular role), "Wilfred" stars Elijah Wood (but maybe you know him as Frodo).

In the pilot episode, Ryan (Wood) is desperately trying to commit suicide only his overly interfering sister M.D. prescribes him sugar pills instead of anxiety pills. It's the next morning when he meets Wilfred who gives him a new outlook on life.

I've been looking forward to this show since it was first announced and especially when the promos first started airing. The comedy is a little raunchy (just the way I like it). The concept is fabulous and tone is playful. Until now, as I research the show to write this post, I had no idea that the series was based on existing material. I hope they aren't going all "Skins" and remaking the Australian show shot for shot. Honestly, I don't understand the point of that. Just go watch the original. Why are some people so concerned with accents? You know what I say? Love an Australian or an Englishman...or anyone else with a hot accent. Annnnyywaaayyyyyy....check it out.

"Falling Skies" Drops Right Into My Sunday Night Schedule

I suppose you could say that I've grown into a bit of a scifi geek. I like enough to want to go to ComicCon. Maybe next year. Anyway, Sunday night was the two hour premiere of TNT's much anticipated "Falling Skies" starring Noah Wylie. The series was created by Robert Rodat, screenwriter of the The Patriot and Saving Private Ryan. This seems to be his first foray into scifi.

They were off to a good start in my book by giving the back story through a child's perspective. Yes, even in a post apocalyptic world, we need art therapy. Alien space ships started docking over major cities (kinda like District 9). They began killing adults and capturing children. Now the resistance battles for survival. Noah Wylie is Tom Mason, a history professor turned commando, fighting to keep his children safe. Mason uses his knowledge of military history to strategize and educate his fellow rebels. His wife was killed soon after the arrival. There are three Mason sons, Hal, Ben and Matt. Ben has been captured and fitted with what the survivors call a harness. It's a bio-mechanical contraption connected on the back. The alien intruders' ultimate plan is unknown. There are two types of invaders. The first are called Skitters. They are spider like creatures that are very agile and seem to be partly organic. The second are referred to as Mechs. These are reminiscent of old school Cylons. They are totally metallic and shoot bullets.

Director Carl Franklin sets a great tone in the pilot. It's a combination of the dramatic, foreboding music and dark, sometimes guerilla like cinematography. Being a Dreamworks production, the special effects are stellar.

When it comes down to it, like all great science fiction, it's about the people. It's about families being torn apart and kids making birthday wishes that they could go back to school. There's a moment when Matt, the youngest gets a toy for his birthday. The entire camp watches as he rides this skateboardy thing around and for a moment they all forget that they are about to march off to war.

In my opinion, Wylie was a great casting choice. He's so likeable, believable as an academic and pretty attractive with that scruff and dirty war clothes.Sorta what I picture a young Robert Langdon to look like before they cast Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code. Tom is a good man and an inevitable hero. Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation) is Dr. Anne Glass, former pediatrician, current trench medic. Veteran action actor Will Patton is Captain Weaver, a military man who believes civilians are just a liability. Hard to keep the human race going with a leader like that. In addition to combating the invading aliens, 2nd Mass (our group of good guys) has to deal with a troop of bandits led by ex-con John Pope taking hostages. It'll be interesting to watch as the remaining population struggles to keep their humanity in the face of such adversity. So far, I like it. I'll definitely be giving this one a shot. TNT has been making a big push for it, so I have a feeling it will be a huge hit or a horrible flop. My bet is the former, but I'm not a betting woman, so please don't hold me to that.

Calling All SciFi Geeks!

The newest edition to BBC America's Supernatural Saturday lineup is "Outcasts". BSG alum Jamie Bamber must have been longing for space after four seasons in present day London on "Law & Order: UK". He returns along with Eric Mabius who you'll recognize from "Ugly Better" or possibly the first season of "The L Word". Damn you Jenny for running Tim out of town!!!

The year is 2040. Earth has become uninhabitable. A group of pioneers settle on the planet Carpathia in a city they call Forthaven. In the pilot, President Richard Tate commands the wife of Expeditionary Mitchell Hoban (Bamber) to spy on him. With good reason, he was planning a coup. The wife, Karina is found nearly dead. Hoban freaks out and figures he's better off on the lam with their young son Linus. Now security officers Fleur and Cass are ordered to track him. Pres. Tate is supported by the Head of Protection and Security, Stella Isen (Hermione Norris). She's a hardass, but we see her vulnerability in her desperation to hear from her family still on Earth.

There's a transporter on it's way to Carpathia with the last of the surviving humans from Earth. Isen is hoping her family made it on to the ship. Mabius is VP of the Evacuation Program and is on his way to Forthaven, that is if the transporter can make it. It seems they're having a bit of car trouble.

I like the direction and the score, but the scenes shot inside Forthaven are too light. There's not enough contrast. It's almost distracting. Many of the actors and characters very likable. I'm very interested to know what Hoban knows about Tate and Isen. If you were a fan of "Survivors", "Being Human", "Primeval", "Doctor Who" or "Battlestar Galactica", you should give this one a try. The previews for next week look veeeeerryyyy dramatic.
